THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW
ABOUT WUCC WORK CAMPS
Washington UCC has been in the ?work camp' business for many years. In the past 5 or 6 years, this has become a more intentional ministry for our mission church.
We feel this ministry is unique in that it provides a variety of experiences for youth and adults to become acquainted with the ?culture of poverty' in comfortable and sometimes uncomfortable settings. Because work campers are in situations that are not common to their every day lives, we like to spend the evenings in reflection and discussion in the framework of worship to help persons examine long held ideas and opinions.
Our work projects include simple improvements to neighborhood housing, repairs, cleaning and improvements to church property, assisting the neighborhood housing corporation in "gutting" buildings for rehabbing (very dirty but great fun for teenagers!), etc.
In addition to doing physical labor, we involve work campers in our nine week summer children's ministry. This is a 4-day-a-week program of Christian Education, recreation, art activities and enrichment experiences. Each Thursday is a field trip to local water parks or other areas of interest.
We also involve every work camper in preparing, delivering and serving a Street Feast to the homeless and extremely impoverished persons in the core of the city.
We prefer to have weeklong work camps arrive on Sunday afternoon/early evening and depart following lunch on Friday. This allows our staff some time for rest and attending to personal matters. We are flexible and will work with you if other arrangements are necessary.
While here, we encourage you to take a day, an afternoon or an evening for recreational purposes. We will send you a list of outstanding opportunities in the Cincinnati area for those purposes if you desire.
It is strongly recommended that there be an adult per five work campers. Because of our housing, adults of each gender are needed for nighttime supervision. If there are more than 6 work campers of one gender, another adult of that gender is needed.
The $200 registration fees covers the cost of all of your meals (except the times you are away from the church), housing, and supplies for projects.
It also helps us pay for staff and "infrastructure" that allows our church to continue to do mission ministry.
